Why You Should Focus on Growing Your Email List

Yes, people hate getting their inbox filled with useless spam. We’ve all huffed and puffed our way to the unsubscribe button, but don’t let that fool you. Mailing lists often times take a back seat in the minds of many entrepreneurs. Many of us started expanding into the business world through social media, and we’ve done so very well. Email lists don’t seem too important or perhaps they feel a tad outdated. Well, let me stop you right there.

This is why you a should focus on growing your email list.

Hello Hannah! …

Firstly, emails are personal. They arrive in your personal inbox. Sending out newsletter and updates in emails gives you the opportunity to address each individual personally, by name. (your mailing list will do this for you, fret not!). We think often about creating content that SPEAKS to your ideal client and your community. Having the opportunity to address and welcome people by their name really builds upon this, allowing you to really capture someones attention on a far more personal, intimate level.

On the other side of that relationship, mailing lists gives people the chance to engage on a deeper level with you and your business. Not just the chance, but the choice. The bottom line is really is that subscribers to your mailing list have chosen to opt in to receiving more contact from you. People are far more likely to be more specific and picky with who they subscribe to in this format. And that’s amazing! If they allow you to send them emails, they are inviting you into a far more personal e-space. They love what you are offering and want more. What’s more, email subscribers are more likely to actually buy products or services. So, if you ever intend to sell, you will really benefit from a mailing list.

It’s also far more intentional and targeted. Not everyone will use social media daily. But the likely hood is that most people will check their email daily. Much of the correspondence that comes through our emails is more important than the content we consume on our feeds. Moreover, lots on content gets missed or looked over in mindless scrolling. To view an email, you have to open it up and then when its open, its the only thing that is on your screen. So, if you have something important to share, and want to be sure that your audience engages with it, then an email list an excellent medium to keep in touch.

Aside from your website (if you have one - and if you don’t a mailing list is a great precursor), your mailing list is the one thing that you actually have domain over and is completely in your control. Touch wood, spin around three times, this will never happen, but - IG, Pinterest or Facebook could turn around and flip a switch and change it all up. You could have your account suspended, hacked, or be shadow-banned, just to name a couple things that could really damage your business. Things can and do happen and it is worth remembering that you do not own your social media pages. No matter how much our social media accounts feel like our own spaces, they’re not. The time and energy that goes into growing your social media accounts is real, so back it up. If something were to go wrong, you will still have an email list for your dedicated community. And there isn’t just a sense of safety in ownership, you can also offer content which doesn’t have to adhere to social media formatting. It’s yours! A blank page on which you put your mark and use it how best suit the needs of your business.

I hope that this has sparked some mailing list inspiration and highlighted the benefits of really working on growing your mailing list. Trust me, the sooner you start the better!

And there you have it, a little dive into why email lists are not a thing of the past and you should really start focusing on growing yours. I’d love to hear how you get on!
