When To Post On Instagram For The Best Engagement

This is one of the questions I get asked the most by students and clients, and the answer is really really simple! However it does take a bit of experimentation (which is actually my favourite thing) and to answer a few questions.

When Will Your Audience Be On Their Phones The Most?

This is the best question to ask to begin with, when will they be on their phones? The answer is usually first thing in the morning when they’re in bed (even though we all know we should avoid this, the reality is most of us don’t!) and in the evening before bed. There also might be a large number of people who check their phones around 3pm at work or even during their lunch break.

Really think about the people you are trying to reach with your posts, the type of life they lead and when they’re most likely to be on their phones.

Where Is Most Of Your Audience?

So you’ve figured out when they’re probably on their phones, but it might be worth checking where most of your audience actually are in the world, because it might not be the same as you. If most of your following are in the US then post during the US’s morning, and get even more specific than that, are they East or West Coast?

What Do Your Insights Say?

Head to your Insights (from your profile click insights below “Edit Profile” - if you can’t see them, make sure your Instagram Profile is a Business Profile), head to the Audience Tab and scroll to the bottom. Instagram will tell you how many people on average in your audience are online on each day and at each time. This is a really helpful indicator as to when the biggest number of your followers are online.

What Actually Works in Practice?

I can give you advice and tips all day long but do you know what’s going to give you the best insight? Actually posting. I know right, it seems obvious. And I know we often want a one size fits all answer and a magic pill to solve all our problems, but the reality is, you posting, checking your insights and analysing how things do is the best way to learn the best time to post!

Don’t Be Afraid To Experiment

This is the only way to go! I’ve given you my advice and now I suggest you go forth my pretties and fly… I mean post, and see what happens!

Remember that Instagram and its algorithm/AI is forever changing and nobody really truly knows what is happening, Instagram likes to keep us on our toes, so be open to switching things up and experimenting!
