How to Cope with Imposter Syndrome

For me, it starts of as a little niggly feeling in my stomach or chest. When the feeling starts to articulate itself a little clearer, it shows up in words like, ‘You don’t belong here’ and ‘You do not deserve to be here’, or ‘Who are you kidding, it’s only a matter of time before the see you’re a fraud’! Imposter syndrome, hello old friend!

Feelings of fraudulence, inadequacy and self doubt can sometimes be fleeting banished with a quick word in the mirror or a pep talk from a mate, and other times they can become pretty all consuming. Often there is no threshold of accomplishments that puts these feelings to rest. And while really these feelings are unwarranted, they can feel pretty damn omnipresent.

So, firstly, remember to give yourself some love. You are on your journey and you’ve got this! Here are just a few other little things to hold onto when imposter syndrome creeps in.

You are not alone

Over 70% of the population in the Western world get imposter syndrome. The feeling that you are the only one who is experiencing this and that somehow everyone else has it together and is smashing it, or deserves something more than you, is referred to as pluralistic ignorance. So trust that you are not alone and try sharing your experience with it. You may help someone else too!

You are not your thoughts

This is a really helpful to remember when our thoughts become overwhelming and intrusive. Thoughts pass and it is okay to have a shit, low, meh day. Acknowledge them and let them pass over you. Sometimes it doesn’t happen as quickly as we want, but it’s part of being human. Thoughts and feelings ebb and flow and they do not define you.

Remember why you are doing what you are doing

Take a moment to remind yourself why you are doing what you are doing. What drove you to start? Who are you here to help? Quite often when we take the focus off ourselves, it makes it easier.
